Detail

Litchi is a kind of subtropical fruit tree and grows in warm climates and moist places. Mature fruit turns from green to red and its flesh is white, sweet and juicy. In the center, there is a shiny brown or dark red oval seed.
"Yuherbau litchis" mature the earliest among all the litchis varieties. Since the appearance looks like an ancient purse, the flesh is like jade, that is why it is given the name "Yu(jade) herbau(purse)." It is also believed that Lady Yang Guifei in the Tang Dynasty loved to eat litchis, which made litchis even more famous.

Yuherbau litchi’s harvest season is around the time of Dragon Boat Festival. In Taiwan, besides Kaohsiung that abounds in litchis, Taitung has approximately eighty hectares of litchi fields, where the most common variety is yuherbau. Especially, Taimali Township has the most output for yuherbau, yielding up to 12,000 kilograms.

Yuherbau litchi needs to be preserved in low temperature. Litchis harvested during the summer have a full flesh, have a juicy, sweet and sour taste, and is favored by many people. Litchis contain 20% sugar in its flesh, and high units of vitamin C, protein, calcium, iron, etc.
