Organic Agriculture

Understanding Organic Agriculture

Organic agriculture complies with the principle of sustainable use of natural resources.

Against using synthetic chemicals, organic agriculture emphasizes water and soil conservation and the management system of ecological balance. The goal for organic agriculture is to produce safe and natural crops. Organic produce is produced through "organic cultivation." In the cultivation process, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and plant-growing regulators are not used. Therefore, the production is often times lower than traditional agriculture and production costs are often higher. Although the appearance of some organic produce may be less attractive, the nutritional value is higher than average produce and it also contains natural flavor. As a result, the price for organic produce is higher.

The benefits of organic produce

First: Increased flavor of produce.

According to a report from American Agricultural Trade Quarterly, hundreds of gourmet chefs in the United States agree that organic food is better than general food. At the same time, a domestic research also shows that rice using organic cultivation methods (organic farming) contains higher free sugars and lower amylose, which makes the rice taste better. In addition, bananas using chemical cultivation methods are usually larger and have a hard core in the flesh. Although grapes are bigger, sometimes they have obvious chemical stains. Loquat's skin is often wrinkled and harder to remove; the flesh is tougher and the taste is not as good. However, organic cultivation methods can improve all these issues caused by chemical cultivation methods.

Second: High in nutrition

According to a report from American Agricultural Trade Quarterly, organic food may not necessarily have more nutrition than traditional food. However, without artificial pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and chemical fertilizers during the cultivation process, organic food is generally safer and healthier. In addition, a domestic research also shows that white rice using organic cultivation methods has more phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, silicon and other elements than those using chemical cultivation methods. However, the measure of zinc and manganese are the opposite. As for fresh edamame, the one using organic cultivation methods contains higher crude fat, crude fiber, ash and free sugars than those by chemical cultivation methods, while it contains less alkali and insoluble solids. Since organic produce only employs organic ways of farming, it absorbs slightly different nutrients than those cultivated by chemical farming. It usually has less manganese, and sometimes less zinc, copper, nickel and other metal content as well. As for fruit cultivated by organic farming, its sugar, acidity and mineral content is higher, but such are significantly lower in water content.

Third: Increased shelf life of produce.

According to the results of the experiments from Taichung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, star fruit using chemical cultivation methods start to have brown spots by the fifth day and are spoiled by the eighth day. On the other hand, organic star fruit starts to spoil by twelfth day. In addition, guava using chemical cultivation methods may spoil a week earlier than organic ones. Other research also shows that organic food has a characteristic of being able to last longer, which may have something to do with its insoluble solids, sugar, and mineral content.

Fourth: Reduced pollution against the environment.

The pest control measures for organic cultivation methods include cultivating different breeds that can resist pests, or using natural enemies, microbial agents to replace pesticides, or using bagging, trap board, and insect light, etc. and such physical methods. As for fertilizer, organic fertilizer replaces chemical ones. This kind of cultivation method can prevent pesticide accumulation and the eutrophication phenomenon in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. It ensures water quality and reduces pollution against the environment.
