Detail

Loquat originated from China, and it was introduced to Taiwan in the late Ming Dynasty. White flowers of loquat trees bloom on branches every autumn and winter and fruits get mature around February to April. Different loquat varieties bear different shapes of fruit: round, pear-shape or obovate. Because they shape like a kind of Chinese musical instruments called "Pipa (Chinese lute)," which is why they are called "pipa (loquat)" in Chinese. The appearance of ripe loquats appears orange with aroma, the peel has some fine hair, the flesh is edible and it contains seeds inside. Loquat has a variety of nutrients, including fructose, glucose, potassium, phosphorus, iron, calcium and vitamins A, B, C, etc. Also, it is a traditional natural treatment to relieve a cough.

Loquat trees are beautiful so they are common in gardens. Currently in Taiwan, loquat cultivation areas are mostly in central Taiwan, such as Taichung, Nantou, Miaoli, and Taitung counties. Among these counties, Taitung is a new cultivation area and some farmers are heading towards organic farming to cultivate loquats. At present, Taitung has the earliest harvest season in Taiwan.
